Top 5 Free Apps on my iPhone

If, like me, you have a small obsession with downloading Apps and download everything in sight; you become swamped in boring/useless junk. Therefore, I thought I’d let you all know the top 5 Apps that I have downloaded. As I’m cheap, I barely ever pay for Apps and go for the free option. Therefore, everything that I include in this post will not cost you a penny. (At the moment, this may change in the future).

I haven’t included Applications such as Facebook and Twitter because everybody should have downloaded these already. All of these Applications can be downloaded from the App Store either on your device or through iTunes.

1) My Fitness Pal

My Fitness Pal is an Application specially designed to help you in your mission to lose weight or eat health. Each day you can select from a huge list of foods to track what you are eating. To this date, I don’t think I have had to add extra calories, every food that you can imagine has been added to the index. You can even track your weight and in time view your weight loss/gain on a graph! Add your friends and see how well they are doing as well!

2) Instagram

Now, you all know that I love Instagram so you knew that it would be in this list. But, there is a reason for this. Instagram is the best photography app that you can download to your iPhone. Take photos, add layers and borders that upload it to a ‘social network’ for everyone to see. Even if you’re not so artistic, it’s definitely a good App to have so that you can look at everyone else’s uploads.

3) FilmOn TV

FilmOn TV

FilmOn TV is my most recent download and probably one of the most used so far. FilmOn TV is an App that streams live television to your device. It has almost all of the channels that a standard Freeview box will give you. You have to use this on Wi-Fi as the creators are worried that it will cost you a lot.. and that wouldn’t surprise me, you’re watching TV after all.

4) DIY Themes

DIY Themes

Now, this was one of the first Apps that I ever downloaded to my phone. DIY Themes is a program that designs a background for your device. You can select the background, shelf like shapes to hold the Apps and add borders. The design is then saved as an image for you to save as your device background. Change the look of your phone without having to do silly things like hacking it!

5) WordPress

I don’t think I need to leave much information here!

Is technology making ‘Cyberstalking’ easier?

Make no mistake: this kind of harassment can be as frightening

and as real as being followed and watched in your neighborhood or

in your home.”

-Vice President Al Gore

I don’t think I’m really going to need to type anything in this post, I’ll just upload a few pictures to back up this statement. It’s becoming easier and easier with recent technological advances to Cyberstalk. As a ‘Family Man’ I take people’s security very seriously. It’s worrying that people can see exactly where you are. I’m sure that this must be even more of a worry for those parents who have children who have internet access.

I‘m sure these pictures explain easier that I could ever say in words. This isn’t a post to make you all worry, but I think it’s something to bear in mind before you select that ‘Add Location’ button.

Gallery Update

This is just a REALLY quick blog update to say that I have finally started adding some of my art to this page. A lot of the things that you see there will probably be digital work, but I will aim to upload a wide variety of media.

The medias that I find easiest to work with are either drawing or painting. Therefore, I’ll aim to get a lot of work done in this style and update the gallery as often as possible.

More to come!

Apple iOS 5

Okay, just a very quick post. I’m sending this blog post from my iPhone. The reason that I’m doing this is to show that it is still working. Everyone must be aware of the new update ‘iOS 5’, I now have that.

However, it wasn’t that easy. During the update I dropped my phone and the cable detached from the PC. Unlucky for me – it disconnected during the ‘Restore’ stage. As you can imagine I went in to panic mode, posting on every forum ever created. In the end, after no responses, I closed my eyes and pressed restore!

And here we are. My phone was restored. Lucky for me – I did a backup yesterday!!

I will do a little post on the update soon, once I’ve played around with it!

A Baby Boy!

Yes, my sister finally had another scan and they confirmed to her that she was going to have a little boy at the end of October!

This will now be my third nephew and I can not wait! Mum’s on holiday at the moment, so we are planning on decorating the ‘nursery’ before she gets back. Fingers crossed – she won’t go mental. Pictures of the nursery will probably follow!

And obviously, the even better news is that the baby is healthy!

Addicted to Instagram? .. Me too!

I had been waiting so long for an iPhone and when I got one I went on a massive App Store spree. I downloaded the usuals; Facebook, Twitter, Angry Birds etc. And then, I came across Instagram (mainly through the regular pictures uploaded by @MeTheManAndBaby). My life changed!

Running Ducks - Original Photograph taken on iPhone4

I see myself as quite a creative person and enjoy drawing and digital work. But I had never really considered photography. Mainly because I don’t really have the best camera or skills for it. But this little piece of free software has made photography 100 times easier.

You can either take a photograph from your Camera Roll or take a picture on the spot, which you can crop to the perfect size. You are then given the option to add your own focal point either linear or circular. This simple touch makes the photograph look more professional immediately.

The next step is to choose a filter layer. Just one click can change the look and mood of your photograph immediately. You can choose ‘X-Pro II’ (my personal favourite), ‘1977’ for the old-fashioned look, or ‘Inkwell’ for the black and white sophisticated look.

I have taken a really simple picture and changed the filter a few times, it’s clear to see how much choosing one of these can change the picture completely. You can see them around this post.

InkWell Filter

Once you have chosen your favourite filter, you choose an appropriate caption for your photograph. Next, you are given the option to share your work on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. This is definitely a good thing to do, to raise other people’s awareness of your work.

My favourite part of this Application is the Newsfeed! Similar to the newsfeeds on other social networking sites, it keeps you updated with other people’s creations. You can follow people, like photographs and even leave comments. A look at the ‘Popular’ uploads is a nice thing to do once in a while, you’d be amazed what you can do with an iPhone and a FREE piece of software.

Early Bird Filter

The only thing I’d suggest to those who created Instagram, is to make the image viewer better when viewing online. When you click a link to somebody’s photograph you are shown that individual picture. I have found a website called Inkstagram, which you log in to with your Instagram details. This then shows you all of the photographs online. I don’t know whether this is owned by the makers of Instagram, but it works!

All-in-all, I’d recommend Instagram to everybody – whether you’re ‘in to’ photography or not, it’s an easy and fun way to share pictures! If you’re anything like me, you’ll find yourself checking people’s feeds and looking at their pictures in awe, all day – every day.

18 and Pregnant – and?

Twenty weeks and two days ago I had a telephone call from my younger sister, asking me to go and pick her up from work. I’m used to being the family taxi so nothing really seemed out of the ordinary. The drive back seemed slightly awkward and there wasn’t really much conversation.

And then, she told me her ‘little bit of news’ – she was six weeks pregnant.

Obviously, my first emotion was total shock; she is only 18 after all. But this shock quickly turned to happiness. In simple terms – I am chuffed for her. My main fear is the reaction that she will receive from everybody else, especially now she is showing.

My niece/nephew

What’s so wrong about having a baby at such a young age? My sister is working two jobs to ensure that ends meet, but will stay at my mum’s house for the first year, to help her financially. I do not have a single ounce of worry and can guarantee that she would be the best mum to her child.

I think that, for me, it’s just weird to know that my little sister is having a child. And it is going to be scary for her, her life is going to change massively – but in a good way.

And yes, I am quite jealous..

When we look at the National Papers recently, there always seems to be a story that isn’t so believable. As we’re all aware, these stories normally revolve around the life and lies of ‘celebrity’ lives. This time though, was the front page story that stated Osama Bin Laden had been killed on 1 May 2011. The infamous Osama Bin Laden will go down in history for the hurt and pain that he caused for the thousands, if not millions, of people who were killed during his terrorist attack on New York City on 11 September 2001.

So, these articles told us that during the night of 1 May 2011 the American Army had stormed one of Osama Bin Laden’s ‘properties’. It is said that President Obama watched a live streaming of the operation via a camera that was attached to the helmet of a U.S Navy soldier; all of this from the Whitehouse. It is said that the U.S Navy stormed the property to find Osama, who held one of his wives in front of him as a human shield. His wife and three males, one said to be his son, we killed on the spot.  The next bullet fired at Osama was said to have hit him in his left eye and the next to what is thought to be his chest. This is a tactic named the ‘double-tap’ which is usual used to ensure the hostile is dead.

So far, this sounds pretty believable right? What happens next is the bit that confuses me. After killing Osama it is said that the body was taken to Afghanistan to receive confirmation that it was him. After supposedly receiving this confirmation and DNA samples it is thought that the body was taken to USS Carl Vinson. After this the body was draped in cloth and taken to sea in a helicopter.  In a weighted bag the body was thrown from the helicopter in to the Arabian Sea.

Okay, so after reading up to this point, can you be sure that he is dead or feel any safer? I know I don’t. I have heard recently that the body was thrown in to the sea and not buried for ‘Religious Reasons’. After looking in to this myself, it appears that the ‘religious Reasons’ mentioned are to bury the body as soon as possible (normally within 24 hours). It is usual that the body be buried at sea, if that is where the death occurred.

So why the sea? I honestly couldn’t answer that – maybe it’s that they didn’t find Osama, or maybe they did and they have made a ‘deal’. At this point in time, nobody can answer these questions – apart from those who were there. Below are the possible reasons that I have found.

  • Saudi Arabia would not take the terrorist’s body,
  • Officials did not want Osama’s burial place to become a terrorist shrine (I can agree with this).

Taking the body to sea would mean that there would be no definite burial spot. Meaning that it would not become a popular place for other terrorists who are following in his foot steps.

Personally, I show this controversy because we haven’t been given any official answers. All that we have seen is photographs in the paper of his ‘blood’ in his room. I’m not saying that I would have wanted to watch Osama’s death – as with what we saw at the hanging of Saddam. But we just need more answers.

Until we receive these answers, I don’t think that the world will relax knowing that the age of terrorism is going stronger.
